Abstract/Contents:Researches the effect of hill slope on nutrient runoff from turf. Experimental plots, established in July 2000 on an Arkport sandy loam, were established by treating existing turf with Roundup (glyphosate) at a rate of 7 pounds/acre. Sod was stripped, the seedbed prepared, and a mix of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass seed was slice-seeded in. Nine runoff collection trenches were created on the down-gradient side of each plot so runoff from upslope and downslope locations could be collected separately. As the turf became more established, turfgrass shoots created a more torturous pathway for runoff, increasing percolation and runoff. It is necessary to asses site suitability before applying nutrients because certain areas of the landscape pose a higher risk to surface water contamination. The study concludes that care should be taken in applying nutrients and pesticides on a slope because runoff from turf is greater from the bottom of a slope than from the top.
