Abstract/Contents:Introduces the annual bluegrass weevil (ABW), Listronotus maculicollis, as a pest on golf courses. This pest of Poa annua, originally found in the metropolitan New York City area, is spreading north to Canada and south to Delaware and Maryland. The ABW larvae cause the most damage to Poa annua, but can also feed on creeping bentgrass. The damage caused by ABW is most noticeable on shorter cuts of grass, including fairways, greens, tees, and collars. Each ABW is capable of killing up to 10 plants during its lifetime. The ABW life cycle consists of five larval instars before it pupates. The most severe damage usually occurs during the first two weeks of June, when the ABWs are large larvae and feed very aggressively on the crowns of the plants. Pesticides such as Dursban have proved to be most effective against the ABW because it remains in the thatch. Dylox (trichlorfon) is also being tested against larvae, but its use would not be legal in many states.
