Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to evaluate "water-use characteristics and minimum irrigation requirements for creeping, colonial and velvet bentgrass under fairway conditions in North Brunswick, [New Jersey]." States that the "experiment was conducted in 2002 and 2003 under a fully automated, mobile rainout shelter." Also states that "water requirements for each species were evaluated based on water-use rates quantified as actual evapotranspiration rate." Results indicate that "the difference in water-use rate among the three bentgrass species under well-watered conditions was not dramatic, but water-use rate generally ranked as colonial bentgrass > creeping bentgrass > velvet bentgrass from July through September [and] species differences in water use were more pronounced when temperatures were highest." Results also show that "under-irrigated turf tends to have a lower water-use rate than well-irrigated turf" due to the plant's inability to transpire when the stomata close due to lack of water. Also states that "all three bentgrass species exhibited seasonal variation in water-use rate...[and] water-use rate in this study were positively correlated to changes in temperature...water use increased as temperature increased."
