Abstract/Contents: | Presents research conducted to determine the effectiveness of several possible alternatives to fungicide use on creeping bentgrass greens when treating dollar spot and brown patch. Lists alternatives including selecting a resistant cultivar and the use of organic fertilizers, biostimulants, silicon, and plant defense activators. States that "creeping bentgrass cultivars differ widely in dollar spot resistance [and] differences among cultivars in brown patch resistance have been reported." Reports that "L-93 creeping bentgrass required significantly less fungicide input over a period of three years compared to dollar-spot-susceptible Crenshaw [creeping bentgrass]. In addition, L-93 allowed for greater flexibility in dollar spot management." Describes the efficacy of organic fertilizers in treating and preventing dollar spot, stating that "compared to urea, Sustane reduced dollarspot on Crenshaw in 2000, and Milorganite was similarly effective in reducing dollar spot on Crenshaw and Providence in 2001." Also mentions fertilizers that resulted in "an increase in dollar spot compared to creeping bentgrass fertilized with urea: Nature Safe (8-3-5) on Crenshaw in both years, and on Providence in 2000; Nature Safe (10-2-7) on Crenshaw in both years; and Sustane with Iron on Crenshaw in 2001." Defines biostimulants as "products that contain one or more of a broad range of ingredients, including nutrients, organic acids, hormones, vitamins, microbial inoculants, [and] plant extracts." Discusses the efficacy of biostimulants in controlling dollar spot, stating that "none of the biostimulant treatments reduced dollar spot or brown patch compared to applications of nitrogen at 0.1 pound/1,000 square feet (0.48 killogram/1,000 meters) every two weeks." Mentions that calcium silicate did not decrease brown patch or dollar spot, stating that "brown patch increased with increasing levels of calcium silicate topdressing in August 2003." Discusses testing of plant defense activators in treating fungal turfgrass disease. States that the plant defense activator Actigard (acibenzolar-S-methyl) "suppressed dollar spot by up to 38% on creeping bentgrass greens." Concludes that "the factors having the greatest potential to reduce fungicide requirements on creeping bentgrass were cultivar selection and the plant defense activator Actigard." |
