Abstract/Contents: | Presents part two of a profile of Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course, which was established during the late 1890s in the Bronx, New York, to foster non-exclusive golfing. Focuses on the appointment of Thomas Bendelow as head of golfing operations in March of 1999, stating that "Bendelow was then, in fact, the most active golf course designer in the U.S. [United States] and had a hand in laying out the preponderance of courses that then existed." Details the redesigning of the course in 1900 from a nine- to an 18-hole course, stating that "at just under 6,000 yards, it was the longest public course in the country at that time - a real challenge when many were still playing with the gutty ball." Emphasizes that "the success of the Van Corlandt golf experiment laid the foundation for the growth of public golf in America. It would change how golf was perceived and eventually how, where, and who would play the game." Mentions the influence of A.G. Spalding on the growth of golf, stating that his objectives "focused on the manufacture and sale of golf equipment (balls, clubs, clothing, etc.)." |
