Abstract/Contents:Identifies annual bluegrass as potentially the most troublesome, invasive weed in cool-season turf grasses due to its unsightly color, ability to tolerate low mowing heights, and poor heat, drought, and disease tolerance. Claims that Tenacity and Pendulum herbicides may show promise for controlling annual bluegrass, but application strategies need to be developed to effectively reduce the presence of annual bluegrass during Kentucky bluegrass establishment on fairways. Describes a study conducted "to determine the best month to initiate fairway conversion, and to determine whether doubling the normal seeding rate of Kentucky bluegrass affects annual bluegrass suppression." Concludes that seeding rate did not affect percentage cover of Kentucky bluegrass, indicating that seeding rate alone is not enough to suppress annual bluegrass populations, and that Tenacity proved to be overall more effective than Pendulum. Provides recommendations for seeding schedules and herbicide application rates.
