From an inscription in the author's gift copy to O. J. Noer of The Lawn: How to Make It, and How to Maintain it, 1939

If the Greens turn yellow
And the Chairman is sore,
What is the remedy?
Ask O. J. Noer

When the clover flourishes
More and more
What shall we do?
Ask O.J. Noer

And what do we get from all this asking
The Ph.D. in Milorganitic light a basking?
No chemical formulae, no Nitrogen cycle
In words always clear to Bill, Joe or Michael
A sensible remedy, or, "Give this a try"
And before we know it the troubles are by.
