Abstract/Contents: | Profiles Dr. Fred Grau, highlighting his experience in the sports turf industry. Explains that when Grau graduated frm the University of Nebraska in 1931 "most athletic fields...consisted of common Kentucky bluegrass, redtop and crabgrass. There was no tall fescue as this grass was not released until about 1945 when the USDA [United Stated Department of Agriculture] came out with the variety Alta. There was an assortment of grasses used during this time on athletic fields such as crested dogstail, meadow fescue, creeping red fescue and chewing fescue but none of these really made a good turf." States that "Fred Grau joined Tom and Tony Mascaro in 1953 as a member of the West Point Products Company. They put together their version of...STMA [Sports Turf Managers Association] 'Seminar on Wheels.' They organized athletic field tours of facilities in New York , Pennsylvania and surrounding states during 1953-1955." Mentions the Dr. Fred Grau Scholarship, awarded at the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Annual Banquet. |
