| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the use of switchgrass or miscanthus grass for energy. States that "although still in the evaluative phase, preliminary studies indicate that both grasses offer potential for growers or row crops such as corn, soybeans and cotton, and quite possibly turfgrass producers, to move into the energy-producing business if a number of elements come together." Explains that "both grasses are carbon neutral products. They take carbon from the environment during growing, so that carbon returned to the environment during burning a short time later does not add to the total environmental input." Mentions trials at the University of Illinois (UI) in Illinois, testing the potential of miscanthus as an income-producing crop and trials at Iowa State University in Iowa, testing the potential of switchgrass. Concludes that "although markets are not yet developed for [switchgrass and miscanthus], studying new ideas is one role of the Agriculture Education Centers." |
