During the early years, the club was situated at Wilmcote, a small nearby village...In late 1924 land was purchased at Alveston Manor Farm, Tillington Road, Stratford for the creation of a new purpose-built golf course...The celebrated Samuel Ryder - donator of the famous Ryder Cup and captain of Stratford in 1929-30, officially opened the club in 27 April 1928." Details greens composition and maintenance procedures at the course. Concludes that "it would be difficult to imagine a more naturally perfect site for a golf course than Stratford, with [approximately] 25cm [centemeters] of beautiful rich light loamy soil resting on a deep bed of fine gravel with pockets of sand. It is one of the best-drained and driest courses in the Midlands." |
