Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to determine cost-effectiveness of maintenance programs for football pitches. Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that the experimental work was carried out on a sandy loam soil with a Lolium perenne L. sward. The trial included four rates of fertiliser (0, 70, 140, 210 kg [kilograms] ha-1 [per hectare] yr-1 [per year] of nitrogen), four sand dressing rates (0, 4, 8, 12 kg m-2 [square meters] yr-1), and two rates of aeration (none and slit tine or solid tine aeration at fortnightly intervals)." Reports that "grass cover during wear was strongly influenced by fertiliser [fertilizer] application and sand dressing. The optimum nitrogen application rate was about 140 kg ha-1. Higher rates of fertilser gave little increase in total grass cover and tended to encourage Poa annua L. The effect of aeration on grass cover was generally not significant." Also reports that "there was no evidence that expenditure on sand above 8 kg m-2 improved grass cover. Increasing expenditure on fertiliser from zero to 140 kg ha-1 nitrogen per year (costs of £2,950 to £4,150 respectively) increased grass cover from about 61% to 64%. The data show no advantage of the extra costs of aeration work in terms of increased grass cover." |
