| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses iron layering in two-tiered putting greens which has come to be detrimental to golf courses across the United States. Explains that the iron layer is forming at a 12 inch depth, preventing the flow of water and creating "anerobic conditions in the root zone." Details research being conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to understand what is causing the iron layer to form on greens. Suggests potential causes including iron in fertilizer, iron in irrigation water, or iron resulting from dissolution of minerals in the sand. Mentions the importance of sampling soil profiles deeper than 3-6 inches and suggests methods for collecting the profiles. |
