Abstract/Contents: | "Herbicide studies were conducted for 2 years on Tifway bermuda, centipede, and St. Augustine grasses at Experiment, Georgia, to determine the amount of weeds controlled, tolerance of the turfgrass varieties and length of establishment period when herbicide treatments were applied immediately after sprigging and followed with sequential herbicide treatments during the first growing season. The average percentage of ground cover of Tifway bermudagrass at 17 weeks after sprigging increased from 33% when no herbicide was used to 56% when DCPA was applied alone and 73% or more when sequential treatments of MSMA + 2,4-D or DCPA followed by MSMA + 2,4-D were used. When weedy grasses were not controlled, Tifway covered less ground during the first growing season with 1/2 yd/1000 ft2 than when sprigged at 1 or 2 yd/1000 ft2. The control of weedy grasses was 84% with DCPA at 17 weeks after sprigging compared with 95% or more with sequential treatments with DCPA followed by MSMA + 2,4-D . Centipede and St. Augustine grass treated with single applications of simazine at Ib/A or atrazine at 2.0 lb/A resulted in good ground cover and controlled approximately 80% of the weedy grasses 18 weeks after sprigging. The percent cover of the turfgrasses was similar on plots treated with atrazine at 1.0 lb/A, but the weedy grasses were not controlled as well as with simazine. Atrazine or simazine above 2.0 lb/A, or repeated application of 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0 lb/A rates to total 6.0 lb/A resulted in less cover of turfgrasses than from single treatments. Centipede grass treated with pronamide immediately after sprigging offered various degrees of weedy grass control, with highest control from sequential treatments. Centipede was tolerant to single rates of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.5 lb/A and selected sequential treatments not to exceed 4.5 lb/A. Pronamide at the 3.0 lb/A single rate caused severe injury. These results show that herbicides can be useful in the establishment of warm season turfgrass varieties." |
