Abstract/Contents: | "St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) sod is widely produced in the southeastern and gulf-coastal United States. Producers apply preemergence herbicides to prevent annual weed emergence. Those herbicides may negatively affect sod grow-in and harvest characteristics. Our objective is to characterize the effects of commonly used preemergence herbicides upon St. Augustinegrass grow-in and sod tensile strength. Field research was conducted as a randomized complete block design at Mississippi State University during summer 2019. Within each experimental unit (2.32 m2), ten plugs (232 cm2 apiece) of MS-B-2-3-98 St. Augustinegrass were planted on June 12. Herbicide treatments were applied on June 13 with a CO2 pressurized back-pack sprayer in a water carrier volume of 374 L ha-1. Treatments included a non-treated check, prodiamine (0.595 kg pendimethalin (1.66 kg ha-1), oxadiazon (2.24 kg ha-1), S-metolachlor (2.78 kg ha-1), atrazine (2.24 kg ha-1), atrazine + S-metolachlor (2.24 + 1.74 kg ha-1), and dithiopyr (0.42 kg ha-1), as well as the treated-check, indaziflam (0.0327 kg ha-1). Visual green cover and spectral reflectance (λ=670, 730, and 780 nm) were observed weekly. ANOVA (α = 0.05) suggests responses differed due to week after treatment (WAT). Means were separated by 95% confidence limits using the GLIMMIX procedure (SAS 9.4 SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). For brevity, 5 WAT results are discussed. Prodiamine, indaziflam, and S-metolachlor inhibited growth, causing lower visual cover (6.9, 5.8, 7.4%, respectively) and lower adjusted NDVI values (0.006, -0.029, 0.011, respectively) than the non-treated check (9.8% and 0.049). Pendimethalin reduced visual cover (7.7%) compared to the non-treated check (9.8%). Dithiopyr reduced adjusted NDVI (0.013) compared to the non-treated check (0.049). Oxadiazon, atrazine, and atrazine + S-metolachlor did not reduce visual cover or adjusted NDVI relative to the non-treated check. Research is ongoing. Sod tensile strength will be measured at maturity." |
