Abstract/Contents: | "Little to no research has been conducted on grass tennis courts to understand the wear tolerance, carrying capacity, and ball to surface interaction for the diverse species that are planted and used on grass tennis courts. Our research objectives are (i) evaluate the wear tolerance and carrying capacity (hours of play) of eight experimental selections including three Agrostis species [colonial bentgrass (CLB), creeping bentgrass (CB), and velvet bentgrass (VBG)], two Kentucky bluegrass (KB) selections, two perennial ryegrass (PR) selections and one fine fescue mixture (FF), and (ii) evaluate surface properties including coefficient of restitution (COR) measured as ball bounce, surface traction, and surface friction on the same eight experimental selections. Three grass singles courts were constructed as replicates to implement the research. The courts are maintained at 7.8 mm height of cut with net posts and base lines installed and natural wear assessed under actual match play initiated in June of 2017. Species carrying capacities in 2017 to cause 70% grass cover were as followed: PR (69.2 hrs) = KB (61.8 hrs) > VB (52.9 hrs) > CB (30.7 hrs) = CLB (26.9 hrs) > FF (13.3 hrs). Grass cover at the base line after 76 hrs of match play corresponded to PR (77%) = KB (72%) = VB (65%) > CLB (39%) = CB (35%) = FF (11%). Species COR measured in 2017 were as followed: FF (0.63) > PR (0.61) = KB (0.60) > bentgrasses (0.54). All species retained at least 60% of the inbound ball velocity after bounce (i.e., COR > 0.60) except for the bentgrasses. These measurements will be repeated in 2018." |
