Abstract/Contents: | "Sand-capping of fairways at construction or renovation is a popular agronomic practice occurring throughout the world. While increased uniformity in root zone depth and texture of sand-capped systems is expected, variability in turf performance due to differences in soil water relations is still observed across sand-capped fairway systems. However, little is documented as to what factors contribute to this variability which leads to challenges for golf course superintendents as they aim to successfully manage soil moisture in their fairway systems. This study was conducted at the Texas A&M University Golf Course, College Station, TX, which had been renovated through sand-capping during 2014. The objectives of the current study were to measure, map, and statistically analyze sources of variability contributing to differences in turf performance during dry-down periods following rainfall and irrigation events. Measured parameters include capping depth, penetration resistance, and NDVI. These parameters were compared to soil-moisture readings at various times throughout the growing season to determine which factors could contribute to soil-moisture heterogeneity. Variability in capping depth was observed in both fairways that were sampled and capping depth appeared to play a more significant role in soil-water relations in only one of the fairways sampled. Elevation/slope, thatch accumulation, or irrigation uniformity could also be drivers of soil-water variability and these factors will be explored. This research is aimed at providing a better understanding of sand-capped systems and to provide information that leads to improved water management and easier maintenance of performance and quality standards." |
