Abstract/Contents: | "PPurple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) is one of the most problematic turfgrass weeds due to a high growth rate, aggressive rhizomes, and prolific tuber production. Currently there are limited preemergence herbicide options that provide efficacious purple nutsedge control. Therefore, the objective of this research was to examine the preemergence activity of two formulations of pyrimisulfan on purple nutsedge control and reproduction. Purple nutsedge tubers were planted in 1 L pots containing native soil at the Athens Turfgrass Research and Education Center greenhouse complex in Athens, GA in 2021. Treatments were initiated on July 14, 2021 and consisted of single and sequential applications of pyrimisulfan (Vexis) at 49 g ai ha-1, EH1663 (liquid formulation of pyrimisulfan) at 52.5 g ai ha-1, and EH1663 + dithiopyr at 500 g ai ha-1. Sequential applications were made on September 3, 2021. A non-treated check was added for comparison. Pots were destructively harvested one month after sequential treatments. Shoot dry weight (g), rhizome dry weight (g), and tuber number were determined for each pot. Tubers were cut in half longitudinally and soaked in tetrazolium chloride for 3 hours to determine tuber viability (%). The liquid formulation of pyrimisulfan (EH 1663) was more efficacious than the dry formulation (Vexis). EH1663 resulted in shoot dry weight, rhizome dry weight, and viable tuber reductions of 100%, 99%, and 100%, respectively, 12 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT). Neither a sequential application nor the addition of dithiopyr increased the efficacy of EH1663." |
