Abstract/Contents: | "The fine fescue grass species commonly used for turf are divided into aggregates or complexes, the Festuca rubra L. (red fescue) and F. ovina L. (sheep fescue) complex. Furthermore, the F. rubra complex consists of strong creeping red fescue (F. rubra L. ssp. rubra Gaudin), slender creeping red fescue [F. rubra L. ssp. littoralis (G. Mey.) Auquier], and Chewings fescue [F. rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaudin; syn. F. rubra L. ssp. fallax (Thuill.) Nyman]. The F. ovina complex consists of hard fescue (F. brevipila Tracey) and sheep fescue [F. ovina L.; syn. F. ovina L. ssp. hirtula (Hack. ex Travis) M.J. Wilk.]. Recently, a team of researchers working on a grant titled "Increasing Low-Input Turfgrass Adoption through Breeding, Innovation, and Public Education" from USDA-NIFA through the Specialty Crop Research Initiative has put together an exhaustive scientific review of the fine fescue turfgrasses that clearly documents differences in growth, production, establishment, management, utilization, pest tolerance, and stress tolerance of the fine fescue taxa. However, there is a lot of confusion and debate regarding the scientific (taxonomic) classification of fine fescues. Therefore, following a careful review of the history of fine fescue binomial nomenclature, a study of published literature on their taxonomy, and documentation of noteworthy misapplied and illegitimate names, the current and recommended taxonomic classification, synonyms, and etymology for each fine fescue taxa will presented and discussed. Our goal is to bring greater clarity and accuracy to the use of scientific names for these grasses, and to encourage the use of the individual names of these grasses rather than the collective term fine fescue." |
