| Abstract/Contents: | "Perusing the literature of nitrogen rate studies, one is struck by the trend that older studies seem to have more N-rates and fewer replicates than more recent studies. This is particularly noticeable in vegetable and turf studies. In many studies, only three rates where applied, with the highest rate being close to the perceived optimum rate. This means that the researcher decided a priori what the optimum rate should be and that the researchers is firmly entrenched in a classification mode, rather than quantitative modeling, aka regression. N-rate studies in corn are different, often deploying 4+ rates and including a 0-N control because it is needed to calculate various use efficiency measures. We will present ideas on the number and spacing of rates needed for efficient regression modeling of the response; regression modeling is not limited to linear and quadratic models. We will present evidence that in rate studies, adding another rate is preferable over adding another replicate. Furthermore, that the range and spacing of rates is of critical importance." |
