USGA Summary Points: | Evaluation of the 2021 Seeded Zoysia SPN has been completed with the identification of nine experimental lines selected for further testing following five cycles of phenotypic recurrent selections. Seed was harvested from early (two Seed was harvested from early (two parent) and late synthetic (three parent) varieties in 2023 at Dallas, TX and Enid, OK with Johnston Seed Company (JSC). In addition, seed was harvested in Dallas from three lines originally identified by JSC as elite seed producing lines. Our collaboration with Woerner Farms (WF) in southern Alabama has led to the identification of seven seed parents adapted to their region. Seed lots were collected from these seven lines and percent germination was determined. A new Spaced Plant Nursery (SPN) consisting of 1152 hybrid progeny (emphasizing Meyer and cold tolerant zoysiagrass germplasm like DALZ 1701and KSUZ 0806 as parental lines) was planted in Dallas in 2023 for future evaluation with potential adaptation to the southern and transition zones. Reciprocal crosses between elite germplasm using a diallel mating design are currently being made for a new 2024 seeded SPN which will allow us to identify elite lines with ability to serve as both maternal and paternal seeded parental lines. |
