Abstract/Contents: | "First-winter survival can be difficult for seeded-bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) grown in the transitional climatic zone. Our objectives were to establish optimum seeding and nitrogen fertility rates to enhance stolon production during the first growing season. Bermudagrass (cv. 'Mirage') was seeded in June at 12.2, 24.4, 36.6, and 48.8 kg of pure live seed ha-1. Nitrogen was applied as a split-plot treatment at 48.8 kg ha-1 just once at establishment (all treatments) or every 7, 14 or 30 d. Trials were conducted during the 1998 and 1999 growing seasons. In 1998, low seeding rate plots were significantly slower to reach 100% cover than all other seeding treatments. Low seeding rates also produced significantly more and larger stolons than did the highest seeding rate. Neither stolon production nor spring green-up was affected by N fertility. No winter-kill was observed in the 1998 trial. Data from 1999 will also be presented." |
