Abstract/Contents: | "Turf quality of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris L.) often declines during summer. The objective of the study was to examine physiological responses of shoots and roots in creeping bentgrass to differential shoot/root-zone temperatures. Shoots and roots of creeping bentgrass (cv.Penncross) were exposed to differential air/soil temperature regimes: 20/20, 20/35, 35/20, and 35/35 C. High root-zone temperatures inhibited root growth and reduced turf quality. Root growth was affected 7 d and 14 d before turf quality at 35/35 and 20/35 C, respectively. Canopy respiration rate was about 5 times higher than canopy photosynthetic rate (Pn) at 35/35 C, but was only half of Pn at 20/20 C. Reducing root-zone temperature (35/20 C) enhanced root growth, canopy Ph, and turf quality. Maintaining lower soil temperature and high root viability was important for creeping bentgrass growth during summer." |
