| Abstract/Contents: | "In the urban western US, approximately 50% of all water used during the growing season is applied to landscapes. As water costs increase and water resources dwindle, alternatives to the traditional lawn grasses are being considered for roadside, lawn, and golf course uses. This paper will examine breeding efforts with blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), alkaligrass (Puccinellia distans), and inland saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) and available varieties for each will be listed. Current and potential turfgrass uses, including unique adaptative characteristics, will be discussed for each species. Establishment and maintenance recommendations will also be covered." |
