Abstract/Contents: | "The bacterium, P. aureofaciens tx-1, is a biological control organism for use in turfgrass systems to control fungal pathogens. The objectives of this study were to determine the environmental fate of P. aureofaciens and the ecological impact of repeated applications. To assess the fate and impact of P. aureofaciens applications, and oligonucleotide probe and primer combination were delevoped, and bacterial profiles were generated by separating 16S rDNA PCR products by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). DGGE analysis revealed the displacement of a bacterial community member from the leaf surface and the thatch following P. aureofaciens applications. The results of this study indicate that the turfgrass canopy and thatch act as filters inhibiting the movement of applied bacteria to the soil and that microbial populations associated with the turfgrass ecosystem can be altered by applications of P. aureofaciens." |
