Abstract/Contents: | "Ice encasement and impermeable winter protective covers can induce anaerobic conditions on annual bluegrass (Poa annua var. reptans) golf greens. We assessed biochemical changes and freezing tolerance of annual bluegrass exposed to a progressively developing anoxic stress during cold acclimation under natural winter conditions in an unheated greenhouse. Freezing tests indicated that freezing tolerance (LT50) was decreased by up to 7C for annual bluegrass exposed to anoxic conditions in comparison with controls acclimated under natural atmospheric composition. Moreover, specific biochemical changes were observed under anoxic conditions including a decrease in high molecular weight fructan concentrations and an accumulation of specific amino acids (ALA, SER, TYR). The exposure of annual bluegrass to hypoxia/anoxia is conducive to conditions interfering with its winter survival potential." |
