Abstract/Contents: | "Laboratory methodologies to determine the total N content of controlled-release N sources have long existed, but methods to evaluate their timed release have not. Currently, the controlled-release portion of a material is evaluated by either a leaching or dissolution test. However, tests do not determine the rate of release of N. Research to develop methodology which could be used in conjunction with laboratory analysis procedures to evaluate and label controlled-release N sources was initated. An incubation methodology employing 245 g of silica sand and 5 g of a native soil was used to evaluate N release curves. Sufficient slow-release N material to supply 250 mg N was incubated for a period of 7, 14, 28, 56, or 112 days and leached. Urea, ammoniacal, and nitrate-N were determined on the leachates. A significant portion of the N released was collected as volatile N. Total N released as a function of N applied was plotted over time to generate N release curves. This methodology can be used to label N release properties of slow-release N materials." |
