Abstract/Contents: | "Relief of turf wear and soil compaction of athletic fields is usually applied through combinations of change of traffic pattern, topdressing and core aerification. Of these, core aerification has the greatest impact on relieving turf compaction. Although core aerification is commonly performed at least once a year on athletic fields there is little research about timing or frequency of application, or the duration of the effect. The objective of this research was to examine the effects of topdressing and deep-tine aerification frequency on soil resistance, turf rooting, soil bulk density, hydraulic conductivity and quality of two Tifway hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis) athletic fields. The experimental design was a randomized complete bock with four replications. Treatments consisted of one, two or four aerifications per year, with or without topdressing. Monthly penetrometer readings indicated decreased soil resistance at lower soil depths (10-15 cm). Overall decreases in bulk density were observed, but there was no significant difference among aerification treatments." |
