Abstract/Contents: | "As conventional sources of organic matter for United States Golf Association (USGA)-type putting greens becomes scarce alternative sources such as composted organic wastes are being studied. The objective of this research was to evaluate three different USGA-type root-zone mixes, evaluating the performance of composted biosolid in two of the mixes. Three mixes were used: 1) 90/10 sand/reed sedge peat, 2) 90/10 sand/comoposted biosolid, and, 3) 85/15 sand/composted biosolid. Each mix was replicated three times in 3.2 x 3.2 m plots, with the same plots constructed in both 1998 and 1999. Collected data included relative color and quality, infiltration rate, water-holding capacity, Mehlich II extractable nutrients, and N mineralization as measured via anion/cation exchange resin. In the first year root-zone mix containing biosolid had a greater infiltration rate and less water holding capacity than the root-zone mix with peat. Color and quality ratings were also lower for the biosolid greens. In the second year differences due to mix were not as large; and color, quality and performance of the biosolid greens improved substantially." |
