Abstract/Contents: | "Mowing quality is an important issue in modern turfgrass management. Turfgrass quality can be maintained most effectively when injury associated with mowing is limited. This study was initiated to evaluate how mowing quality of 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) is affected by three different plant growth regulators and two different mower adjustments. Two walk-behind reel mowers were adjusted, one with reel-to-bedknife contact and the other with no reel-to-bedknife contact plus six hours of use prior to the initiation of treatments. Embark 2S (Melfluidide), Primo 1EC (Trinexapac-ethyl) and Proxy 2 SL (Ethephon) plant growth regulators were applied at label rates and compared to a control. Mowing quality was quantified by a visual rating, a measurement of the tissue damage and by chlorophyll content. The reel-to-bedknife contact mower adjustment consistently resulted in the best mowing quality, producing 60% less tissue damage than the no reel-to-bedknife contact mower adjustment. On average, grasses treated with Embark had the lowest visual quality, whereas the control had the highest visual rating. Proxy reduced the chlorophyll content compared by 20% from the control. Mowing quality is affected by the use of plant growth regulators and by mower adjustment. With these mowers the reel-to-bedknife setting produced the best mowing quality." |
