Abstract/Contents: | "The decline in turf performance from vegetative shade-stress may be due to changes in light intensity, light quality, and the micro-climate. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of light quality on cool season turfgrass growth, morphological characteristics, and carbohydrate status. Plants of Lolium perenne L., Agrostis palustris Huds, and Festuca rubra were grown in controlled environments with light sources creating red/far-red ratios of 3.0, 1.3, 0.4, 0.2, but all similar in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). In comparison to the highest red/far-red ratio, plants under the lowest red/far-red ratio increased shoot extension by 35% for creeping bentgrass, 39% for chewings fescue, and 41% for perennial ryegrass. Additionally, decreases in tiller number and total non structural carbohydrates were apparent in all three species under the lowest red/far-red ratio. The results indicated that light quality is a significant component of vegetative shade-stress and should be considered in management programs." |
