| Abstract/Contents: | "Shoot and root relative growth responses, leaf Na+ concentrations, and salt gland excretion rates of 35 bermudagrass turf cultivars were determined. Grasses were grown in a controlled-environment glasshouse, and clipped 2X per week at 0.375" to 0.75", depending on cultivar. Salt ions were balanced to mimic effluents from Phoenix, AZ. Growth measurements, taken at 4 salinity levels, were expressed relative to control plants. Relative (to control) shoot growth declined linearly with increasing salinity. Slope of regression of relative shoot growth to salinity level, and predicted 50% shoot growth reduction, were correlated with % green leaf canopy area and relative shoot depth across cultivars. Shoot and root salinity tolerance parameters were correlated with Na+ excretion rate, indicating the importance of salt gland activity as a salt tolerance mechanism in bermudagrasses." |
