Abstract/Contents: | Discusses a two-part project to look at the problems caused by accumulation of organic matter in surface of USGA greens. Describes the problems that summer bentgrass declines because of low oxygen stress induced by high organic matter. States two problems: "summer brings bentgrass decline, and cool weather leads to inhibition of root development." Explains that hot, humid weather leads to an oxygen stress, lower oxygen and infiltration rates, which accerelates the soil depletion. States solution by using the HydroJect system, the solid quad-tines, other small tine or a slicer, to increase topdressing and wetting agents. States next part as examing root development; root depth declines during cool season, which causes low oxygen levels and low water infiltration. Concludes that the goal of this project is "to come up with recommendations that would allow much better cultivation techniques that are non-disruptive and do not cause surface disruption." |
