Abstract/Contents:"Rapid strides have been made in the breeding of turf grass varieties in the past few years. This development is reflected by the increasing number of varieties better suited for turf purposes which are submitted to the Federal Seed Agency for control purposes. Perennial rye grass, red fescue and meadow fescue are the species with the greatest number of grass varieties. The varieties of each species differ widely in their suitability as it is specified in the variety register for turf grasses such as ornamental lawn, lawn for ordinary wear, lawn for great wear and tear and lawn for landscape purposes. High quality turf varieties are only used on a wider scale when easy production is guaranteed." Each kind of grass type, and several of their cultivars is evaluated in some detail. In general though, the overall quality of grasses on the market keeps improving.
