Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrasses are often grown under shaded conditions. While fertilization programs are well-developed for non-shaded sites, they are less defined for shaded turfgrasses. An experiment was conducted for 3 years at Griffin where we evaluated different nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) rates and times of application under 75-80% shade. Fertilizer programs were studied for the grasses: Kentucky-31 tall fescue, common centipedegrass, Meyer zoysiagrass, Emerald zoysiagrass, and Raleigh St. Augustinegrass. The major findings were as follows: 1) Tall fescue responded to 0.5 N/1000 sq. ft. when applied in February, May, August, and October for a total rate of 2 lb/1000 sq. ft. per year. This represents about one-half the annual N rate recommended for non-shaded sites. Shaded Kentucky-31 tall fescue areas may need reseeding in the fall more often than in full sun. 2) Centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass were severely cold injured in 2 of 3 winters when grown in heavy shade. Annual N rates of 1.0 and 2.0 lb/1000 sq. ft. appeared to be adequate for centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass, respectively. 3) Neither Emerald nor Meyer zoysiagrass responded to N higher than 2 lb/1000 sq. ft. per year. Both grasses provided good cover under shade without winterkill." |
