Abstract/Contents: | Perennial zoysiagrass is a warm season turfgrass grown primarely in warm, humid, transitional zones. It forms a uniform, dense, low growing, quality turf with very little shoot growth. It is the most wear tolerant turfgrass of all turfgrasses in the United States. Its resistance to heat and drought is good with a fair tolerance to shade. Fertility rates for zoysiagrass are fairly low with Nitrogen requirement extremely low. The major disadvantage of zoysiagrass is its slow establishment rate. This research is being done to determine if there is any means to improve the re-establishment and establishment rate of zoysiagrass. This 1983 report represents the fourth year for the test to be in effect. Some changes were made in 1983: 1) the removal of Zoysia tenuifolia and Midwest from plot sites, 2) the addition of two new cultivars, Belair (R52-25) and El Toro (2-1) and 3) the addition of five experimental selections, UCR No. 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9. All plantings were vegetatively propogated, one mowed at two inches with clippings returned to the plot. A sublot fertility program was initiated with 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 lbs of N/growing month. The P and K requirements were met with annual soil tests and irrigation was applied to prevent visual wilt. The turf quality ratings of this research were based on uniformity of color and shoot density. The scale used was a 1 to 9, with 9 being the best. Emerald and FC13521 had slightly higher rankings than Meyer did. Meyer also had a higher rate of fall low temperature discoloration then the others. There was no visual evidence of disease or insect damage in 1983. The other ratings for 1983 were very similiar to 1982. Evaluation of turf morophological characteristics found FC 13521 to have the smallest leaf width, the second highest shoot density, with the internode length and diameter being intermediate. Meyer had the shortest internode length, the highest leaf width and internode diameter, and the lowest shoot density. Emerald had the highest shoot density and highest internode length, with leaf width and internode diameter being intermediate. Ratings of the experimental selections found some promising results for Texas. The 56-8 and 56-6 selection showed superior quality above all others with consistent high ratings. Selections did get brown patch but resistance was noticed in some selections. The wear tolerance of the zoysia plots was exceptional. The test was stopped after 16,000 revolutions of the wear tolerance simulator. No Zoysiagrass leaves were torn off during this wear tolerance test. |
