Abstract/Contents: | Discusses three studies designed to evaluate the performance of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)-Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) mixtures under compaction and shade. States that "the studies are located on the turfgrass research facility at the Washington State University, Puyallup Research and Extension Center." Also states that "study 1 was planted in 0.2m deep sand, axis, and peat. Kentucky bluegrass-perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass-intermediate ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass-annual ryegrass mixtures were established under a shade structure...Study 2 was planted in 0.2m deep sand and peat. Mixtures were consistent with the plots in study 1 and are in full sun. Study 3 is on the Puyallup fine sandy-loam soil. It was planted consistent with studies 1 & 2 with mono-stands of selected Kentucky bluegrass, annual, intermediate, and the three perennial ryegrass cultivars." States that each study received simulated sports traffic with a Brinkman Traffic Simulator. Concludes that "the annual and intermediate ryegrasses germinated three days earlier than the perennial ryegrass and all received 100% cover after four weeks. Visual observations of the perennial, intermediate and annual ryegrass mixed with the Kentucky bluegrass, shows that all tended to help increase germination and establishment of the Kentucky bluegrass." |
