Abstract/Contents: | "Lawn and sports turf seed now comes with a protective coating that enhances germination and seedling growth. The new coat increases the overall size of the seed a bit and provides a microbe-package of nutrients and medicine to prevent seedling diseases. In trials with perennial ryegrass, fescue, bentgrass, and bermudagrass, coated seed established faster, survived better, had more lush green leaf growth and better root development, in addition to being better protected from seedling diseases. Other advantages of the coated seed include: 1) Faster spreading and earlier cover of bare areas. 2) More seeds becoming plants under normal seeding conditions. 3) Improved reliability of stand establishment (no need to sow high rates ofseed to cover high losses). 4) Protection of seed from bird attack. 5) Increased tillering for improved turf formation and reduced weed pressure. 6) Increased root mass and rhizome development for continued rapid growth. 7) More seeds staying out. They don't drift in the wind when seeded and don't pond as a result of irrigation." |
