Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the loss of grasslands and natural areas due to economic development. Explains that "just as types of development differ, so do the types of loss being inflicted upon...grasslands. In many instances the grassland communities have been totally supplanted with hard surfaces. Removing the natural ability of these plants and their roots to slow water and increase runoff percolation has led to areas of localized or general flooding in Lincoln's [Nebraska] urbanized watersheds." Mentions that "the natural progression of plant succession also impacts grasslands. Where burning or routine removal of woody plants ceases, grasses often succumb to shading...As housing development occurs nearby, it is only a matter of time before management by burning will raise the concerns of neighbors." Concludes that "grasslands are an integral part of most natural areas, but are just as vulnerable to direct and indirect development pressures. Proper management of grasslands, therefore, should take their unique structure, function and change into consideration as they are developed, modified or completely removed. |
