Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted during 2 years in a mown meadow to study the effect of macroarthropods patrolling soil surface on biota and decomposition rate of grass litter. Two types of mesocosms were compared: open-accessible to large arthropods, and closed-not accessible. In the first year predators were the largest contributor to this group of arthropods. In plant litter of accessible mesocosms significantly lower numbers of fungivorous Acarina (Tyrophagus sp.) and root feeding Aphidoidea (Anoecia corni) were found. Numbers of bacterivorous Nematoda and fungi were higher in the open series. In most cases Bacteria and Actinomycetes were more abundant in closed series. Higher accumulation of total organic carbon was found in sandy substratum of open mesocosms, whereas weight loss of exposed litter was similar in both series. The results indicate that the intensity of patrolling of the soil surface by macroarthropods influences considerably the structure of biota and carbon transfer."
