Abstract/Contents: | Texas A&M University Turfgrass Field Laboratory is the site where the effects of nitrogen fertility and mowing height on the evapotranspiration (ET) rate of nine warm season grasses is being studied. The nine C-4 warm season grasses were evlauated in mini-lysimeters, using the water balance method. Each plot was given 30 minutes of water per day and given .5 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. per growing month. All plots were mowed at 1.5 inches for a uniform practice and later tested at their optimum growing height for a cultural practice phase. The ET rate was higher when all grasses were maintained at their optimum growing height as opposed to the uniform practice system. Of the nine C-4 warm season grasses, those with a high nitrogen requirement were more affected by the nitrogen than the height of cut in their ET rate. On the other hand, those warm season grasses without high nitrogen requirements reacted more to the height of cut than the amount of nitrogen in their ET rate. |
