Abstract/Contents: | Testing is being done at Texas A & M University Turfgrass Field Laboratory to determine the effect of phosphorus on new establishments of Tifway and Santa Ana bermudagrass. The test plots were given 2 lbs of N, P, and K prior to seeding. When seed reached 1 1/2 inches in height they were given .5 lbs of n/1000 sq. ft. Different rates of phosphorus were also applied ranging from 2-4 lbs per 1000 sq. ft. Results showed that in the Tifway plots, those areas given 2 or 3 lbs of P/1000 sq. ft. had a faster rate reaching a 75% coverage than those with less phosphorus. This indicated that at lower levels of phosphorus and potassium they didn't stimulate vegetative growth. Results from the Santa Ana plots were very similar to the Tifway results. The 3 lb of P per 1000 sq. ft. produced a faster rate of reaching 75% total coverage. Rates of 4 lbs per 1000 sq. ft. didn't perform as well as the 3 lb plots but they performed better than the 2 lb plots. The 3 lb plots produced the best lateral branching of all the tests. The two experiments show that a requirement exists for a high level of phosphorus to be present when planting turf vegetatively in order to get the fastest and best results. The 3 lb rate was performed best, since it produced the best lateral branching of all the ratesu and the fastest coverage rate. |
