Abstract/Contents: | Profiles perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), highlighting breeding achievements and objectives. States that perennial ryegrass "is probably the first perennial grass to be cultivated, and, released in 1933...It is characterised by being late flowering, consequently producing an extremely leafy, nutritious and persistent pasture for animal grazing that was particularly tolerant to heavy grazing and trampling." Reports that "indications are that breeders have been successful in improving a whole range of traits over a 25 year time period associated with growth characteristics producing cultivars with improved performance under both wear and close cutting regimes." Mentions germplasm evaluation, genetic dissection of traits, and cultivar synthesis. Concludes that "turfgrass breeders have been very successful in developing beautiful landscapes but often at the expense of a fast dwindling water and fossil fuel resource." |
