Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to study the effect of organic amendment and wetting agent on turfgrass quality, disease occurence, hydrophobicity and fungicide leaching from USGA [United States Golf Association] putting greens." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the experiment was conducted from May 2006 [until] May 2007 on a three year old experimental green seeded with creeping bentgrass 'Penn A-4' in the field lysimeter facility at Bioforsk Øst Landvik...Norway...The experimental plan included two rootzone compositions (straight sand without organic matter vs. the same sand amended with 2.3% (w/w) garden compost 'Green Mix'); two surfectant treatments (no surfectant vs. 'Primer 604', 19 1 ha-1 [per hectare] applied at monthly intervals from May to [September] 2006); and two fungicides, prodione 1.5 kg [kilograms] a.i. [active ingredient] ha-1 (Rovral 750) and azoxystrogin + propiconazole, 600 + 375 g [grams] a.i. ha-1 (Amistar Duo), sprayed on three occasions: June, July and [October] 2006." Reports that "as the main effect, turfgrass quality was significantly better on compost-amended than on straight sand plots, but application of wetting agent improved turfgrass quality on straight sand plots during the warm and dry summer period...The improvement was associated with a reduction in the spatial variability...in soil water content at 4-10 cm [centimeter] depth, showing that soil water repellence was performed on 1 [September] 2006, but its effect lasted well into the next spring as shown by water droplet penetration tests on 24 [April] 2007." States that "a major disadvantage of the wetting agent was that it increased the occurrence of Microdochium patch in autumn and pink snow mould [mold] in the spring, both diseases being caused by Microdochioum nivale." |
