Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to determine the effectiveness of several ballmark repair tools. States that "previous research has demonstrated that shorter tonged tools that push the turf are as effective as traditional tools and result in less damage than tools designed to lift." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "this field study was conducted in June-July 2007, on a mature, actively growing bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L. 'Pennlinks') stand grown on a sand-based research putting green...There was no defined thatch or mat layer present and organic matter in the upper 2.5 cm [centimeters] was approximately 28 g [grams] kg-1 [per kilogram]." Reports that "ballmark scars were largest on day 0, with scar areas ranging from 205 to 640 mm2 [square millimeters]...Unrepaired scars in the soft area were substantially larger 640 vs. 459 mm2 than those in the firm area. Scar diameter decreased over time and by day 28 all tools resulted in equivalent scar area." |
