Abstract/Contents:States that "the effects of elevated levels of atmostpheric CO2 [carbon dioxide] are widely debated and the potential influence of soil C [carbon] on the system has been...highlighted...The scale of soil disturbances in football pitch construction is considerable. Approximately 5250 t [tons] of soil are moved in a typical sand based rootzone construction of a single pitch and this is likely to release large amounts of bound soil C." Presents a study conducted to "conceptually investigate the soil C dynamics of football pitch construction and maintenance over a number of years post construction...The model of soil C was based on a balance of sources and sinks in the sports turf soil system. Soil C was calculated cumulatively for 15 years post installation." Reports that "each of the different model scenarios produced considerably different results." Concludes that "analysis indicates that, under best case scenarios, a football pitch could become a sink for atmospheric CO2 within the first year post construction. Under the worst case scenarios it would never reach a point of carbon neutrality."
