Abstract/Contents:Discusses mycorrhiza, explaining that "mycorrhiza is a symbiosis between plants and fungi. Over 80% of the flowering plants live in an intricate community with a soil fungus. Thereby the fungus provides the root with water and nutrients and receives in return for it glucose from the photosynthesis." Describes the influence of mycorrhizae on plants, stating that "the mycorrhizal fungi can reach smaller soil pores and absorb more water and nutrients than plant roots themselves." Reports that "it has been shown, that arbuscular mycorrhizae play an important role...in high altitude soils." Mentions a study investigating the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) in the Swiss Alps. Explains that "mycorrhizal products can be used purely as a soil improver. This option is used...for instance for the cure of trees ectomycorrhizae. Besides that, AMF are mixable with many other raw materials that influence the mycorrhization and growth in the plants in a positive way." Concludes that "considering the formulated AMF product (illustrated as 'AMF + org. [organic] nutrients + Penicillium sp.') there are obviously synergistic effects, leading to the highest vegetation cover after the first and third year in the trial. The deployed AMF inoculum takes over in some measure the role of a pioneer or nurse colony enabling a sustainable development of the revegetation and enhances even the succesion of the local AM fungi."
