Abstract/Contents:Reports results of surface seeding (without slicing) establishment of tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass compared to tilled soil and also using thatching, irrigation, mulching, and coated seeds as test variables in Kentucky. Experiment one relates effects of variables on 100% tall fescue seeded plots on June 15, 1987. Excessive rainfall minimized the effects that irrigation might have had on the treatments and was believed to be the cause of high seedling mortality on the irrigated plots. Tilled plots with no cover and no irrigation appeared to provide the best emergence in the inconclusive results. Experiment Two broadcast a mix of tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass on killed/scalped sod with six different covers or mulches placed over top and plots receiving no irrigation or daily (3 times/day) irrigation totaling 2.0 inches per day. Establishment was slow and weed competition severe as rainfall became excessive but straw appeared to produce the best results in this inconclusive experiment.
