Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the winter hardiness of grasses, stating that "perennial grasses adapted to northern latitudes undergo biochemical, biophysical and morphological changes during the fall of the year that increase their tolerance to low temperatures." Explains that "the degree of hardiness developed by the plant depends on a number of factors such as nutrition, water content of the cells, when hardening begins, the rate of hardening, and the consistency of that hardiness throughout the winter." Offers suggestions to decrease winter plant damage, including having a proper drainage system, following a harvesting schedule, and the application of fertilizers. |
