Abstract/Contents: | Discusses potential methods of action for insecticides. Suggests that "it may be time for superintendents to give more thought to incorporating products with...modes of action [developed around 2008] into their insect management programs." States that "the U.S. [United States] EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] has...developed voluntary insecticide resistance management guidelines based on the IRAC [Insecticide Resistance Action Committee] mode of action classification scheme." Details an experiment conducted on 12 modes, including carbamates, organophosphates, phenylpyrazoles, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, spinosyns, pyriproxyfen, Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki, diacylhydrazines, hydramethylnon, oxydiazines, and anthranilic diamides. Describes the development history of each of these modes and the current products registered for use on golf courses containing each mode. Concludes that "a fundamental principle of insecticide resistance management is to minimize dependence on a single product or multiple products that share the same mode of action." |

Note: | "Editors note: This is the first of two articles based on a GCSAA seminar, 'Turf insecticides modes of action and resistance management,' which was taught by the authors for the first time at GCSAA's Education Conference in Orlando in 2008. The seminar explains the basics of insect physiology, insecticide modes of action and resistance management strategies. Pictures, color Tables Graphs |
