Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the role of soil organic matter and microorganisms in pesticide degradation. Lists "natural processes" that may have an effect on chemical behavior, including "solubilization by water"; "sorption to soil particles"; "microbial degradation"; "chemical degradation"; "photodegradation"; "volatilization"; and "plant uptake." Presents the results of a study conducted to "determine exactly what occurs in a turfgrass soil system following a pesticide application." Details methods and materials used in the study, including soil sampling and preparation, degradation experiments, and a sorption experiment. Reports that "as turfgrass systems become older and OM [organic matter] levels rise, simazine binds more to soil particles and becomes less bio-available. As turfgrass systems age and OM levels increase, the potential for simazine leaching into groundwater decreases even though biological degradation rates may be lower...Simazine sorption increased as simazine concentration increased for all three soils within the concentration range evaluated." Concludes that "turfgrass systems provide a highly sorptive layer of organic matter with high microbial activity, reducing the potential problems caused by the introduction of pesticides into the environment." |
